Blue Is the Warmest Colour is a 2013 French romantic coming of age drama film written, produced, and directed by Abdellatif Kechiche and starring Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos.

The movie centers on a 15-year-old girl named Adèle who is climbing to adulthood, questioning her sexual identity and experiencing her first love. Do you agree that first love plays a very important role in everybody’s life? Do you remember your first love?

  1. In the beginning of the movie Adèle has a short relationship with a guy named Thomas but finds no satisfaction in this relationship and soon starts dating Emma. Do you agree that if it wasn’t for her unsuccessful attempt with Thomas she would have never considered dating girls?
  2. How do we understand that Adèle comes from a middle-class working family while Emma is from an upper-class artsy family?
  3. There are several extended sexual scenes throughout the movie. Do you agree that such scenes are an integral part of the film?
  4. Why does Adèle decide to cheat on Emma? Does she no longer love her or are there any other reasons for her adultery?
  5. Why does Adèle decide to come to Emma’s exhibition at the end of the film? Why does she leave so soon?
  6. Do you agree that the blue color is very symbolic? If yes, give examples and explain what it symbolizes. Have you noticed any other examples of visual symbolism in the movie? If yes, which ones?
  7. The French title of the film is «The Life of Adèle — Chapters 1 & 2″. Does it mean that the story is to be continued?
  8. What future do you think life has in store for Adèle? What about Emma?
  9. What is the idea of the film?
  10. At the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, the film unanimously won the Palme d’Or from the official jury and the FIPRESCI Prize. Do you think the film deserved it?
